To represent the client during the electrical energization phase of the project, ensuring all energization activities are planned, executed, and documented in compliance with project specifications, safety standards, and statutory requirements.
The role involves close coordination with EPC contractors, OEMs, and client operations to achieve safe and timely energization of electrical systems.
What are you going to do
Pre-Energization
Review and approve energization plans, method statements, switching schedules, and risk assessments submitted by contractors.
Verify that all pre-energization checks, inspections, and test records (IRs, continuity, insulation resistance, functional tests) are complete and accepted.
Ensure all lock-out/tag-out (LOTO) procedures and permit-to-work (PTW) systems are in place and strictly enforced.
Confirm readiness of protection systems, interlocks, and emergency shutdown features.
Witness and approve site acceptance tests (SATs) prior to energization.
Energization Execution
Oversee energization activities on behalf of the client to ensure compliance with the approved procedures.
Coordinate with the contractor’s electrical and commissioning teams to manage sequencing and minimize system downtime.
Monitor and verify correct switching operations, breaker racking, voltage application, and load testing.
Act as the client’s on-site authority to stop work in the event of unsafe conditions or non-compliance.
Post-Energization
Verify system stability, protection relay operation, and correct load distribution post-energization.
Review and sign off energization records, as-built drawings, and redline mark-ups.
Ensure all commissioning data and test reports are submitted for project turnover.
Participate in troubleshooting and resolution of any electrical issues arising during start-up.
Interface & Coordination
Liaise with EPC contractor(s), OEM representatives, and client’s operations team to coordinate energization activities.
Communicate progress, risks, and deviations to the client’s project management team in real time.
Support integration of electrical systems into the overall plant commissioning schedule.
Safety & Compliance
Ensure energization works comply with:
Project specifications
IEC, IEEE, NEC, NFPA 70E, or relevant standards
Local electrical codes and statutory requirements
Promote a strong safety culture; enforce use of PPE and adherence to electrical safety procedures.
Participate in incident investigations and root cause analysis if required.
Essential skills and knowledge
Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
8+ years in electrical commissioning, energization, and start-up on large industrial projects (oil & gas, petrochemical, power generation, heavy industry).
Proven track record in high-voltage (HV) and medium-voltage (MV) switchgear MCC, Transformers and distribution boards.
Strong understanding of protection coordination, earthing systems, and electrical safety.
Client-side or owner’s engineer experience is an advantage.
