What Does a Heavy Equipment Mechanic Do?
Heavy Equipment Mechanics inspect, troubleshoot, and repair large mobile mining equipment. These include:
Haul trucks (CAT 797s, Komatsu 980Es)
Hydraulic shovels
Bulldozers
Graders and scrapers
Drills and crushers
Raise bores and Alimaks
Day-to-day responsibilities:
Diagnose mechanical, hydraulic, and electrical issues
Conduct preventive maintenance and scheduled inspections
Repair or replace engines, transmissions, brakes, and undercarriage systems
Work with computerized diagnostic tools
Collaborate with operators and supervisors to prioritize repairs
Maintain accurate maintenance and safety records
Required Qualifications
Red Seal Endorsement (Mandatory)
To work as a certified Heavy Equipment Mechanic through Brunel Canada, you must hold the Red Seal endorsement under the trade name Heavy Duty Equipment Technician (HDET).
How to get the Red Seal:
Complete a 4-year apprenticeship (or challenge the exam with sufficient work experience)
Pass the Red Seal Interprovincial Exam
This certification allows you to work anywhere in Canada and is especially sought after for remote mining operations.
Other Essentials
4–10+ years of experience working with heavy mining or construction equipment
Familiarity with Caterpillar, Komatsu, Hitachi, and Liebherr equipment
Alimak experience is an asset
Knowledge of hydraulics, pneumatics, electronics, and welding
Valid Class 5 Driver’s License
Must be eligible to obtain a Possession and Acquisition License (PAL Card) for handling explosives
Ability to pass pre-employment medical, drug, and alcohol screening (including THC testing)
Experience working in safety-sensitive environments
